BUITEMS Hosts International Seminar on Neurological Disorders and Genetic Risks in Consanguineous Families

Quetta, September 16, 2025 – The Department of Biotechnology at the Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) successfully organized a one-day International Seminar-cum-Webinar on Neurological Disorders and Genetic Risks in Consanguineous Families.

The event was held under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Khalid Hafeez (Vice Chancellor BUITEMS), Prof. Dr. Arbab Mirwais Kasi (Pro-Vice Chancellor), Prof. Dr. Naeem Shahwani (Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences & Informatics), and Prof. Dr. Wali Tareen (Chairperson, Department of Biotechnology). The seminar was led by Prof. Dr. Haleema Sadia, Chief Organizer.

Seminar Highlights
The program began with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Prof. Dr. Shahjahan Shabbir Rana, followed by the National Anthem and the screening of a BUITEMS promotional video. In her opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Haleema Sadia emphasized the increasing burden of neurological disorders and the genetic risks associated with consanguineous marriages in Pakistan.

The seminar featured an engaging Q&A session where participants discussed topics such as genetic counseling, early detection, and avenues for collaborative research. National and International Participation.

The event drew strong participation from students, researchers, and faculty representing institutions including Punjab University, UVAS Lahore, University of Balochistan, GCU Faisalabad, SBK Women University, Aria Institute of Medical Sciences, Bolan Medical Complex, CENAR Hospital, and BUITEMS. Adding to its global impact, international colleagues from the University of Foggia, Italy, also joined the session.

Outcomes and Recognition
The seminar successfully raised awareness about the genetic risks of consanguineous marriages, encouraged dialogue between clinicians and researchers, and promoted youth engagement in cutting-edge research.

The program was made possible with the support of ORIC, BUITEMS, whose facilitation was greatly acknowledged. The efforts of the organizing team Dr. Rafiullah Tareen, Dr. Rameez, Dr. Abdul Wajid, Ms. Hira Masood, and Mr. Shan Ahmed were commended for their dedication and commitment.
