Officially recognized by UNESCO as the International Day of Mathematics, and informally known as Pi Day, March 14 (3/14) marks the yearly celebration of the mathematical constant pi and is the birthday of the famous physicist, Albert Einstein. The constant pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter and is approximately equal to 3.14. The Pi Day is a day loved by math enthusiasts and it is more than just a number for mathematicians, pi has all sorts of applications in the real world.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences organized a seminar on 14 March 2022, to mark this event and invited Prof. Dr. M. Sharif, Dean, Faculty of Sciences at University of the Punjab, to give a talk on “Black Holes: facts, fiction or unknown”. Prof. Dr. Sharif is well known Mathematician at both the national and the international level. He has published 612 research articles in well reputed journals with more than 12000 citations.
In addition, students participated in the celebration by arranging an exhibition and presenting different mathematical models and posters. The respected guest, Prof. M Sharif and Prof. Dr. Naeem Shahwani, Dean FBS, visited the displayed models and posters and appreciated their efforts. Such types of activities create the interest in students about Mathematics which plays a pivotal role in every discipline of study.
